Our Story

More than six decades of Allan’s Bakery.

A family bakery shaped by Brooklyn, Caribbean traditions and generations of customers.

When was Allan’s Bakery founded?

Allan and Gloria Smith began baking and selling from their station wagon in Brooklyn in 1958.

The first Allan’s Bakery storefront opened on Saratoga Avenue in 1961. The bakery moved to 1109 Nostrand Avenue in 1967, where our Brooklyn flagship remains today.

Who owns Allan’s Bakery today?

Allan’s Bakery remains family-owned and family-run by the Smith family.

Are Allan and Gloria still involved with Allan’s Bakery?

Yes. Founders Allan and Gloria Smith have remained active parts of the Allan’s Bakery story and family business.

What Caribbean island does Allan’s Bakery represent?

Our family, family friends, colleagues and customers from throughout the Caribbean have influenced Allan’s Bakery over the years.

Rather than claiming to represent only one island, we recognize the broader Caribbean community that helped shape who we are.

Is there an Allan’s Bakery in Saint Vincent?

Our family also has a bakery in Saint Vincent called Allan Smith & Family Bakery.

What are Allan’s Bakery’s most popular items?

Our longtime favorites include:

  • Currant rolls
  • Hardo bread / hard dough bread
  • Beef patties

During the holidays, fruit buns, cross buns and pies are especially popular. Black/Fruit Cake is a Christmas favorite.

If I can only try one thing, what should I order?

Start with the currant roll.

It’s flaky pastry rolled with currants, sugar and spices and has been one of Allan’s Bakery’s signature products for generations.

What should I try if I don’t want something very sweet?

For something lightly sweet, try a coconut bun.

If you want something savory, a beef patty or fried bake and codfish sandwich is a great place to start.

Where is the food made?

Allan’s Bakery’s primary production is baked and cooked on premises at our Brooklyn bakery at 1109 Nostrand Avenue.

What’s in the bakery?

Menu availability can change, so contact us if you have a specific dietary question before ordering.

Does Allan’s Bakery have vegan options?

Yes. Vegan options include our signature currant rolls, vegetable patties and several fruit turnovers.

Some additional products may also be adaptable for special orders depending on availability. Please contact Allan’s Bakery in advance if you have a specific request.

Do you offer gluten-free items?

Gluten-free items are not part of our standard everyday menu. Please contact Allan’s Bakery in advance to ask about current special-order possibilities.

If you have an allergy or medical dietary restriction, please speak with our team before ordering so you can make an informed decision about whether a product is appropriate for you.

Do I need to refrigerate Allan’s Bakery products?

Many of our baked goods are best enjoyed fresh, hot or at room temperature.

Customers who stock up often freeze products for later. Hardo bread in particular freezes and thaws well.

Certain products shipped nationwide, including patties, codfish balls and 10-inch round cakes, may be packed with ice packs for transit.

Pickup, local delivery and nationwide shipping are different services, so here’s how each works.

Can I place an order for pickup?

Yes. Pickup is available from Allan’s Bakery.

Does Allan’s Bakery offer local delivery?

Yes. Local delivery is available through third-party delivery platforms, with availability depending on your address and the delivery range of each location.

Does Allan’s Bakery ship nationwide?

Yes. Select Allan’s Bakery products can be ordered online for nationwide shipping.

Nationwide shipping is separate from same-day local delivery.

Do you offer same-day nationwide shipping?

No. Because our products are baked, prepared and packaged for shipment, nationwide orders cannot be shipped the same day they are placed.

Same-day service may be available for local delivery depending on your address, location and delivery platform.

How long does nationwide shipping take?

Please allow approximately 1–5 business days for baking, packaging and handling before an order is shipped.

Once shipped, our current shipping options are generally designed for approximately 1–2 business days in transit. Holiday periods and courier delays can affect timing.

When will my shipped package arrive?

Once your package has been handed to the courier, use your tracking number for the most current delivery estimate.

Tracking information may take up to approximately 24 hours to appear in the courier’s system.

Can I use an Allan’s Bakery gift card online?

At this time, gift cards purchased online are for use on our website, while gift cards purchased in-store are for in-store purchases.
